MEDFORD - In 1985 the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) was created by the local community's grassroots response to the social crisis of homelessness. These collaborative efforts resulted in the opening of the city's first emergency shelter and the establishment of SHC. Today, SHC transforms lives by providing services, support, resources and housing to well over 600 men, women, and children every year.
With one in five children living below the poverty level, winter clothes are a luxury to some, but a necessity to all. With another winter season approaching, the Tufts Football team is hoping to bring some warmth to the community through a coat drive.
At Tufts Football's final home game on November 11 at Ellis Oval / Zimman Field versus Middlebury College, there will be a coat drive supporting the Somerville Homeless Coalition's efforts to provide families in-need with the winter clothing necessary for a New England winter.
We are looking for the following:
• Clean coats of all sizes (men, women and children's) that are in fair to good condition
• Other winter clothing items: sweaters, jackets, mittens, hats or scarves
There will be a box for coat collection located in the entry to the Oval, near the will call booth.
Please come support the Tufts Football team against Middlebury on November 11 at 12:30 pm, and support the Somerville Homelessness Coalition by cleaning out your basement and bringing your extra coats and winter clothing for donation.
