Honigford Shares Medalist Honors at Golf's Blazer Fall Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY - Freshman Alex Honigford of the Tufts University golf team tied for first place individually at the 2017 Blazers Fall Invite hosted by Elms College on Sunday and Monday.

The two-day tournament was played at two different sites. Sunday's action was held at Hickory Ridge Golf Club (par 72) in Amherst, then Monday's 18 holes were played at The Orchards Golf Club (par 71) in South Hadley. Honigford was consistent at both places, shooting 73's in both rounds for a 146 total. He had been tied for fifth after Sunday's play, but moved up the board on Monday. He finished in a tie with Babson's Chris Bornhorst, who had a 74 on Sunday and a 72 on Monday.

The Jumbos finished 10th as a team out of 16 squads at the event. They moved up a spot on Monday after finishing 11th through one round on Sunday. Monday's Tufts scorers along with Honigford were sophomore Ethan Sorkin and sophomore Michael Kenler with 80s and senior Nik Nugnes with an 81. Tufts' four-man total of 314 strokes on Monday was seven better than their final 321 score on Sunday. The 635 two-day total was just one behind ninth-place Roger Williams (634) and was only one stroke ahead of 11th-place Amherst (636).

Sorkin shot a pair of 80s for the Jumbos to finish tied for 37th overall in the field of 80 golfers. Nugnes shot a two-round 163 (tied for 44th) and Kenler totaled 166 strokes in the tournament (tied for 56th). Sophomore Sanjee Mukherjee also played for Tufts and shot an 86 on Monday for a two-day 174.

Babson won the team title by 14 strokes with a 598 final score.

The Jumbos are off two weeks before finishing their fall season at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship on Cape Cod October 22-23.
