I. Name & Purpose
The Department of Athletics hereby establishes the “Tufts Athletics Hall of Fame,” and this Charter shall serve as its governing bylaws. The purpose of the Tufts Athletics Hall of Fame (“Hall of Fame”) is:
A. To honor the men and women who - through athletics participation, coaching, service or support have distinguished themselves in the field of intercollegiate athletics, brought honor and acclaim to the university, and contributed to the success and advancement of intercollegiate athletics at Tufts; and
B. To provide an opportunity for university alumni and friends to celebrate Tufts' tradition of athletics excellence, thereby strengthening their connections to each other and to the University.
II. Awards & Eligibility
A. Categories of Eligibility for Hall of Fame Award: There are four distinct categories of candidates eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame:

The four categories of eligibility are not exclusive; an individual may be nominated and inducted separately as a student-athlete, as a coach, or staff, or as members or a member of a team.
B. Eligibility Requirements for Hall of Fame Award: In order to be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame:
1. Former student-athletes must have achieved excellence in varsity athletics at Tufts and must be at least five years removed from his or her final year of athletics competition at Tufts;
2. Former coaches, administrators, and staff must have served the university with distinction for at least five years, and a minimum of five years must have passed since the end of the individual’s employment at Tufts; and
3. Teams must have achieved excellence in varsity athletics at Tufts, and five full academic years must have elapsed since the end of the academic year in which the team competed.
A candidate who has not satisfied the waiting period requirement in one category may nevertheless be inducted into the Hall of Fame in another category. In very limited and special circumstances, the Selection Committee in its discretion may vote to induct a nominee from any category who has not satisfied these service and waiting period requirements.
C. Other Factors for Hall of Fame Award: Accomplishments by a nominee achieved prior to or after his or her time at Tufts may factor into the nominee's candidacy as long as the accomplishments fall within the sphere of athletic achievement and bear some connection to the nominee's athletic career at Tufts.
D. The Brown & Blue Award: Separate from induction into the Hall of Fame, the Selection Committee has the discretion to present the Brown & Blue Award to alumni, donors, benefactors and supporters who have made significant contributions to the success of Tufts Athletics. In years when the Selection Committee elects to bestow the Brown & Blue Award, it will be presented at the Tufts Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Recipients of the award will not be considered members of the Hall of Fame.
III. Nomination Process
The Selection Committee shall collaborate with the Department of Athletics and other university offices to solicit nominations for the Hall of Fame and the Brown & Blue Award from the campus community and alumni. The Selection Committee will consider nominations from any source as long as adequate information is provided and the candidate’s qualifications are verified by the Director of Athletic Communications.
Nominations may be made using the approved online nomination tool available on the Hall of Fame website or by submitting the equivalent information in writing to the Director of Athletic Communications by the published deadline. The annual deadline for submitting nominations is December 1.
Once a valid nomination is received, the nominee shall remain eligible in perpetuity for induction without re-nomination. This does not preclude future efforts to actively re-nominate the candidate.
IV. Selection Committee
A. Duties: Members of the Selection Committee will be responsible for soliciting, recommending and screening nominees for the Hall of Fame nominees; deliberating and voting on nominations for the Hall of Fame; developing the program for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony; and periodically reviewing and recommending necessary or useful changes to the Hall of Fame bylaws.
B. Composition: The Selection Committee will be composed of 11 voting members:
1. Director of Athletics
2. Director of Athletics Communications
3. Representative of the Tufts University Advancement Office (selected by the Vice President for Advancement)
4. Representative of the Tufts University Office of Alumni Relations Office (selected by the Executive Director)
5. Head Coach of a Male Sport (selected by the Director of Athletics)
6. Head Coach of a Female Sport (selected by the Director of Athletics)
7. Chair of the Tufts Athletics Board of Advisors (or designee)
8. Male member of the Tufts Athletics Board of Advisors (selected by the Chair of the Athletics Board of Advisors)
9. Female member of the Tufts Athletics Board of Advisors (selected by the Chair of the Athletics Board of Advisors)
10. Alumna who participated in varsity athletics at Tufts (selected by the Director of Athletics and the Chair of the Athletics Board of Advisors)
11. Alumnus who participated in varsity athletics at Tufts (selected by the Director of Athletics and the Chair of the Athletics Board of Advisors)
C. Chair and Secretary: The Chair of the Selection Committee shall be the Director of Athletics (the “Chair”), and the Secretary of the Selection Committee shall be the Director of Athletics Communications (the “Secretary”).
D. Term Limits: Other than as set forth below, Selection Committee Members will be subject to three year term limits.
1. The Chair and the Secretary shall not be subject to any term limit.
2. A Selection Committee member may be reappointed for a second term at the Chair's sole discretion.
3. To ensure continuity on the Selection Committee, four of the remaining nine Selection Committee positions shall be appointed for a one-time, initial two-year term to ensure that rotations on and off the Committee do not result in a loss of valuable institutional memory.
V. Selection Process & Class Composition
A. Frequency: A new class of inductees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame annually.
B. Timeline: The Selection Committee will meet in the fall to:(i) review and screen the nominations, and develop a short list of candidates for whom additional research should be conducted; and (ii) schedule future meetings, establish deadlines for the Committee’s remaining work, and set the date for the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The Selection Committee will meet again in winter to review the nominations and cast final votes for the next class of Hall of Fame inductees. All meetings of the Selection Committee may occur in-person or via teleconference or video conference.
C. Induction Class Limits: The Selection Committee may induct at each induction ceremony no more than six new individuals or teams whose contributions to Tufts Athletics occurred in 1971 or after (i.e., the NESCAC Era). There shall be no limit, however, on the number of inductees whose contributions to Tufts Athletics occurred prior to the NESCAC Era.
D. Conflicts of Interest: If a member of the Selection Committee has been nominated as a candidate for the Hall of Fame or otherwise has a conflict of interest that would compromise the integrity of the selection process, that Selection Committee member must recuse himself or herself from the selection process.
VI. Announcement & Induction Ceremony
The Director of Athletics (or designee) will inform the individuals selected for induction as soon as possible following the Selection Committee’s decision. At the appropriate time after each of the inductees has been notified, the Director of Athletics Communications will issue a press release announcing the newest members of the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will occur annually in the spring. The Induction Ceremony will take place in Cousens Gym or another suitable venue on the campus of Tufts University. Each inductee (or next of kin for posthumous inductions) will receive a suitable memento to commemorate the induction. Each inductee will be asked to speak at the Induction Ceremony, but will be limited to an amount of time appropriate to enable the program to conclude in a reasonable amount of time. If a team is inducted, the team captains (or other suitable representative if no captain is available) will be asked to speak on behalf of the team, but in instances in which more than one captain participates in the acceptance of the team award, the multiple captains must together adhere to the same limit applied to individual inductees.
Inductees will receive complimentary admissions for up to two people (in addition to the inductee) for the Induction Ceremony, but will be responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses incurred in connection with attending the Induction Ceremony.
VII. Amendments & Review
The Selection Committee may review this Charter periodically and propose any necessary revisions and amendments. Such amendments must be approved in writing by the Department of Athletics to become effective.
