Men’s Crews Sweep Amherst, Continue Winning Ways on Sunday

Spencer Moslow manned the 2-seat for the 2nd varsity eight

MALDEN - One day after the Tufts varsity men's right defeated Wesleyan for the first time since the early 1990s, the Jumbo varsity and 2nd varsity eights returned to the Malden River for races with mid-state rival Amherst on Sunday.

The crews responded positively to the challenge of three races in 24 hours with a two-race sweep. Under brilliant sunshine, but with 15 mph headwind and temperatures in the low 30s, the two Jumbo eights left no doubt that things are on the upswing this spring.

The 2nd varsity eight was first out of the gate, and led in wire-to-wire fashion over Amherst. The Jumbos didn't seem phased by the conditions as much as their counterpart and covered the 2,000-meter Malden River course in 6:42.3, significantly slower than yesterday's time in benign conditions. Amherst was never really in it, and timed out at 7:35.85, for a victory of significant margin by the Jumbos.

The Jumbo varsity eight raised its spring record to 5-1, with the lone blemish yesterday's loss to Bates, and cruised to six-length win over Amherst. The Jumbos, unfazed by the wind and waves, finished the race in 6:36.19, with Amherst trailing at 7:02.04.

Tufts returns to water next Saturday against Middlebury on the Malden River. Racing begins at 9:15 am, and it will be Senior Day, where the Tufts Rowing Community will honor the members of the class of 2016. Next Sunday, all the crews will travel to Worcester for the Brown and Baker Cups races against WPI, with additional crews from Skidmore, RPI and others.
