Men's Rowing Opened 2016-17 Season at Green Mountain Head Regatta Sunday

Junior Andrew MacMillen was a top 10 finisher

PUTNEY, Vt. - The Jumbo men's rowing team was in Vermont competing at the the Green Mountain Head on Sunday to open their season.

According to Tufts head coach Noel Wanner, the regatta is unique in that although the fields are small, the quality is outstanding. On the men's side, the field included multiple national team athletes, such as John Graves, a member of the U.S. men's quadruple scull.

"It's rare for college athletes to get to test themselves against competition like this," Wanner said. "While it can be humbling, it can also be inspiring."

Most of the Tufts athletes raced in the Open 19-34 age category. Notable results include a top-10 finish from junior Andrew MacMillen, who was seventh out of 34 in the race with a 19:58 time. Tufts took five positions in the top 22 of the race overall. Junior Ashton Knight was 18th (21:18.3) and senior Jeremy Slavitz was 19th (21:18.8).

In their collegiate debuts, freshmen Paul Gelhaus and Graham Forrester rowed to 21st and 22nd place finishes with 21:36.3 and 21:49.6 times, respectively.

The Tufts men are in action next on October 15 at the New Hampshire Championship Regatta.
