MALDEN – The Tufts University men's rowing team opened the spring season with two victories in three races against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Malden River Saturday morning.
The Jumbo second varsity eight and third varsity eight both posted wins, while the first varsity eight was edged by the Bears.
Tufts' 2V8 posted a 10-second win, covering the 2,000 meters in 6:24 compared to 6:34 by Coast Guard. The Jumbo line-up included sophomore cox James Grant, freshman stroke Graham Forrester, freshman 7-seat Paul Gelhaus, junior 6 Tyler Hagedorn, senior tri-captain and 5 Doug Burt, sophomore 4 Nick Hartman, senior 3 Tyler McCullough, sophomore 2 Ryan Bell and senior bow Zach Merchant.
The Jumbo 3V8 won by a 21-second margin with its 6:51 time to Coast Guard's 7:12. The winners lined up with senior Connor Fallon as coxswain, senior Rohail Rai at stroke, sophomore Samson Braun at 7, sophomore James Miller at 6, sophomore John Bailey at 5, senior Hani Chkess at 4, junior Alec Whipple at 3, sophomore Edmund Takata at 2 and junior Andrew Takasugi at bow.
The Bears edged Tufts in the first varsity eight race, 6:23 to 6:31. The Jumbo boating was sophomore cox Hannah Frankel, sophomore stroke Ryan Magnuson, sophomore 7 Chandler Glass, freshman 6 Adrian Tanner, sophomore 5 Rich Gilland, junior co-captain and 4 Andrew MacMillen, freshman 3 Mats Edwards, senior 2 Jeremy Slavitz and junior bow Ashton Knight.
Tufts gets right back at it on Sunday with races on the Malden versus UMass, Middlebury and Amherst starting at 9 a.m.
