|Senior John Bailey helped Tufts' 2V8 place fourth in New England|
WORCESTER - The Tufts University men's first varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight all finaled at the 2017 New England Rowing Championships (NERC) held on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday.
The novice eight was the first Jumbo team into the water. Competing in an eight-team time trial, they were second with a 5:05.459 time. Williams College won the race with a 5:03.839 finish. Tufts was one of six teams which advanced to the novice eight grand final, but the race was cancelled due to unsafe conditions on the water later in the afternoon.
Tufts' boating for the novice eight was freshman coxswain Emily Kim, junior Hayes Ward, freshman Ross Hamilton, freshman Peter Malinovsky, sophomore Jordan Bacher, freshman Dean Ericksen, freshman Mitch Koganski, freshman Matt Agurcia and freshman Sam Agnew.
The Jumbo second varsity eight won their heat with a 7:09.081 time over 2,000 meters, defeating second-place Williams College by over three seconds (7:12.423). Earning a spot in the grand final, the Jumbos were fourth overall in a 6:56.152 finish. They were 10 seconds behind New England 2V8 champion Bates College (6:46.619). Coast Guard (6:49.195) and Wesleyan (6:54.061) were also ahead of the Jumbos.
Tufts' 2V8 line-up was sophomore coxswain Hannah Frankel, sophomore Ryan Bell, freshman Mats Edwards, sophomore Isaac Mudge, senior Jeremy Slavitz, sophomore Rich Gilland, sophomore Tyler Hagedorn, sophomore Chandler Glass and senior John Bailey.
In the first varsity eight competition, the Jumbos also won their heat with a 6:47.616 time. They were two seconds ahead of Rhode Island, which crossed the finish line in 6:49.621. In the grand final, the Jumbos were sixth with a 6:45.802 time. WPI won the NERC 1V8 title with a 6:23.784 mark.
The Tufts 1V8 had sophomore coxswain James Grant, senior Zach Merchant, senior Tyler McCullough, freshman Adrian Tanner, freshman Paul Gelhaus, junior Andrew MacMillen, sophomore Nick Hartman, senior Doug Burt and junior Ashton Knight.
Tufts was also entered in the third varsity eight final, which was set for 4:10 p.m. However, the race was cancelled due to unsafe conditions on the water.
The men's point trophy standings, which combine all races, were not immediately available.
The Jumbos will race in the National Invitational Rowing Championships back at Lake Quinsigamond next Friday.
