JUMBOS TIE BROCKPORT 3-3 AT RUTLAND HERALD INVITATIONAL, BUT GOLDEN EAGLES ADVANCE IN SHOOTOUT

Tom Derosa scored twice, including the game-tying goal with just 16 seconds left

RUTLAND, Vt. - Brockport and Tufts skated to a 3-3 tie in regulation,  but Golden Eagles' netminder Joe Regan (Yonkers, NY) made all four saves in the shootout round and Tom Galiani (Lindenhurst, NY) netted the only goal to guide Brockport to the championship game  of the fourth annual Rutland Herald Invitational (RHI) Tournament on Saturday evening at Spartan Arena in non-conference action.

The Golden Eagles record moves to 0-8-1 overall. The Jumbos go to 1-2-1 on the season.

Brockport opened up the scoring at 10:03 of the first period taking advantage of a 3-on-2 odd man rush. Right winger James Cody (Schwenksville, PA) carried the puck into the offensive zone and drop passed it to Finnerty at the top of the right faceoff circle. Then, Finnerty corralled the puck and ripped a shot on net that Cody redirected in behind Tufts' goaltender Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) for an early 1-0 lead.

Barchard kept the deficit at 1-0 with under a minute left to go in the  first period robbing senior center Chris Berardini (Batavia, NY) on two point-blank opportunities.

In the second, Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, CO) evened the score  for the Jumbos with  a power play goal at 8:47 on a beautiful feed from teammate Zach Diaco (Rumson, NJ). Near the left post, Diaco found a wide open Cooper in the slot and he finished with a wrist shot past Reagan to make it 1-1.

At 16:31 of the second period on the power play, Brockport regained the lead as Finnerty punched home a rebound off of a Justin Noble (Georgetown, ONT) shot that was initially saved by Tufts goaltender Evin Koleini (Clarence, NY) for a 2-1 advantage.

Golden Eagles forward Nick Panepinto (Tonawanda, NY) gave Brockport a 3-1 lead at 12:18 redirecting a wrist shot from teammate Adam Shoff (Port Dover, ONT) behind Koleini for a two-goal cushion at the time.

At 13:41 of the third, Tufts forward Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA) banged home a rebound off of teammate Mike Vitale's (Bookfield, IL) shot to cut into the gap at 3-2.

Derosa struck again at 19:44 to even the score at 3-3 and force overtime. With the Jumbos' net empty, Derosa drilled home a loose puck in front of the net for his second goal of the contest.

Brockport will face the winner of the Castleton/Becker game in the championship round of the RHI, tomorrow, at 3:00 pm. Tufts will face the loser of the Spartans/Hawks game at 12:00 pm in the consolation round.
