Jumbo Hockey to Host Williams in Quarterfinal Round of NESCAC Championship on Saturday

MEDFORD - For the first time in the 12 seasons that they have been a member of the NESCAC hockey league, Tufts will host a conference tournament game on Saturday (Feb. 25) when the Jumbos welcome Williams College to Valley Forum II for a quarterfinal. Game time is 4:35 pm.

Coach Brian Murphy's Jumbos earned the #4 seed in the conference championship by finishing with a 9-8-1 league record. It's the highest seed that the team has earned in the playoffs since joining the NESCAC league for the 2001-02 season. The Jumbos are 12-10-2 overall, matching the most wins they've had in a season during the NESCAC era (2000-12).

Williams enters as the fifth seed with an 8-8-2 NESCAC mark and 11-8-5 overall. The teams split a pair of games during the season, with the Ephs winning 4-1 on December 2 and the Jumbos taking a 3-2 decision in overtime on January 27.

The Jumbos are led offensively by sophomore Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO), who is tied for second in the conference with 16 goals. He's accumulated that total in 18 games after missing six with an injury early in the season. Junior linemate Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, AZ) is tied for fifth in the league with 16 assists.

Saturday's game will feature two of the better goalies in NESCAC, along with two of the most promising freshman players. Jumbo senior goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) leads the conference with 770 saves, and has made them with 92.2 percent frequency. He's ranked right behind Williams senior Ryan Purdy's .929 save percentage, which is third in the league.

Tufts' Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN) and Williams' Craig Kitto are two of the top three freshman scorers in NESCAC. Voigt is at 10 goals with 13 asists for 23 points. Kitto has eight goals with 12 assists for 20 points.

Saturday's winner will move on to the NESCAC semi-finals, scheduled for March 3 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
