Jumbo Matt Witko Selected by Ohio Machine in Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft
MEDFORD - Matt Witko, an All-American midfielder for the Tufts men's lacrosse team, was selected in the third round of Major League Lacrosse's (MLL) supplemental draft held on Wednesday. He was the 17th overall pick, and the first pick in the third round by the expansion Ohio Machine.
The MLL Supplemental Draft was the second of three drafts slated to take place prior to the 2012 season which begins in late April, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. All players were selected from the MLL Player Pool. Each of the league's eight teams made selections in 18 rounds (144 total picks).
Tufts' DJ Hessler (Monkton, MD) DJ was selected by the Boston Cannons in the 13th round to retain his rights. He had been picked up by the Cannons in a waiver wire draft after the collegiate season ended last spring.
A United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association First Team All-American last spring, Witko scored 31 goals with 13 assists for 44 points in 21 games last spring. He scored 98 goals in 72 career games with Coach Mike Daly's Jumbos.
Most MLL players have other full-time jobs. League games and practices are held on weekends. Witko will be attending medical school in the fall. Hessler is a biomedical engineer in nearby Cambridge.
