MEDFORD - Senior John Uppgren scored five goals with four assists as Tufts rolled to a 19-6 win over SUNY Cortland in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship at Bello Field Saturday.
The Jumbos (18-2) advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh straight season. They will host Ithaca College on Wednesday (May 18) at Bello. The Bombers won their second-round game against Montclair State 11-8. The quarterfinal game time at Tufts has not been announced.
Also today, Amherst College defeated #1 seed in the north RIT, 17-14, making the Jumbos the top remaiing seed on that side of the bracket. St. Lawrence, a 12-9 winner over Springfield today, is the fourth team still alive in the north.
SUNY Cortland, led by by two goals and an assist from Devin Phelps today, finished their season at 14-6.
Tufts out-scored Cortland 14-1 over the final 39 minutes of regulation today to run away with the victory. Zach Richman added five goals for the Jumbos, who have now won 16 straight NCAA contests at Bello. Jumbos senior goalie Alex Salazar stopped 14 of 20 shots on goal.
The visiting Red Dragons struck first on a Phelps goal 54 seconds into the first quarter. Uppgren had two goals and two assists as Tufts took a 4-2 lead before Joey Panariello's goal narrowed the margin to 4-3 at the end of one.
After Jake Gillespie scored the first goal of the second quarter for Tufts, Cortland netted two goals seven seconds apart to tie the score. Phelps had his second of the game at 11:27, then after a Pat Baldwin face-off win Phelps assisted a Nate Beresovoy goal at 11:20.
It was all Jumbos from there. Tufts scored five goals before halftime to lead 10-5 at the break, including three with an assist by Uppgren.
Tufts then had the first four goals in the second half and led 14-5 on Austin Carbone's tally at 1:12 of the third. Whistled for three penalties simultaneously early in the third, Tufts killed the Cortland advantage and then Jumbo Ben Andreycak scored nine seconds after the release. He had a goal and an assist in the third-quarter surge. Baldwin stopped a nine-goal Jumbo run with a face-off win and score at 1:06, but Tufts capped the quarter as Richman scored from Garrett Clarke with eight seconds left making it 15-6.
The Jumbos then out-scored the Red Dragons 4-0 in the fourth, including two by Richman.
Tufts finished with a 55-34 advantage in shots. The battle between two of the top face-off men in the nation went to Jumbo Conor Helfrich with 16 wins compared to 10 for Baldwin. Tyler Olney scooped up four groundballs for Tufts while Austin Carbone finished with three goals and an assist.
With the nine points he scored today, Uppgren became just the third player in NCAA Division III history to record 400 career points.
Joe Scalise stopped 10 shots in 51:21 of action in goal for the Red Dragons. Beresovoy and Panariello both had a goal and an assist. Dan Hurley picked up three groundballs.
