Men's Soccer Tabbed National Coaching Staff of the Year by NSCAA

MEDFORD – Tufts men's soccer head coach Josh Shapiro and his staff were named the Division III Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).  The Jumbos won the program's second national championship earlier this month, with a thrilling double-overtime win over Calvin.

This is the second national honor from the NSCAA for Shapiro.  He was named the Coach of the Year in 2014, following the team's first national championship.  This is the first year the NSCAA has named a coaching staff of the year, instead of just a coach of the year.

Joining Shapiro in leading the Jumbos to the national title this year were assistant coaches Bryan Harkin, Mark Waterman, Connor Brown and Fernando Valencia.

Shapiro and his staff guided the Jumbos through an epic tournament run, as they entered the tournament as an unranked team and finished the year as the No. 1 ranked team in the NSCAA national poll.  The Jumbos (15-5-2) won the 2016 national championship after starting winless in their first three games.  Tufts lost in the NESCAC Quarterfinals and were questionable to receive an at-large NCAA berth.  The Jumbos, who allowed just one goal in six NCAA games, won four 1-0 decisions on their run to the title.

Senior Gaston Becherano was named an NSCAA Third Team All-American and classmates Daniel Sullivan and Zach Halliday both earned NSCAA All-New England Region honors. The Jumbos solid defense was the backbone of the team as they were third in the country in save percentage (0.874) and eighth in the nation in team goals against average (0.52).  Becherano led the team in points this year with 12 goals and an assist in his senior campaign.

The men's soccer program has seen a wealth of success during Shapiro's seven-year tenure in Medford.  The Jumbos have made the NCAA tournament four of the last five years and won a stretch of eight NCAA tournament games in a row during the 2014-15 seasons.

Shapiro and his staff will be honored at the NSCAA Awards Banquet on January 13, 2017 at the JW Marriott Los Angeles in conjunction with the 2017 NSCAA Convention.
