Men's Soccer Takes Home a 1-0 Win Over Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN - Sophomore Zach Lane scored as the Tufts University men's soccer team earned a 1-0 NESCASC win at Williams College today.

Zach Lane scored the only goal of the game, his third of the season.

Tufts improves to 12-1-1 and 7-1-1 in NESCAC heading into the final week of the regular seaosn. Williams falls to 8-2-4, 3-2-4 in NESCAC after the game played at Cole Field this afternoon.

The game began and intensity was immediately high. There were several strong scoring attempts on each side, but none came to fruition until the first period's halfway mark.

The lone goal of the game came in the 23rd minute with the players crowded in front of Williams' goa. Tufts' Zach Lane was able to break away from the pack and his shot beat the keeper to put the Jumbos ahead.

The goal was followed by an opportunity for the Ephs at the other end of the field. Nick Ranieri took a penalty kick and Tufts goalkeeper Bruce Johnson made the save, but collided with a teammate, sending the ball out of bounds and giving Williams the corner. Off the kick Demain Gass jumped to volley the ball on to the goal, but Johnson made the save again to keep Williams scoreless.

Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, a player from each team had a shot on goal, but neither found the back of the net.

The Jumbos continued to hold a strong defensive position for the remainder of the game, reflective of their play all season, having only allowed one goal in all 14 games.

Sixteen different players have scored a goal for Tufts this year, tying the number from last year's national-title winning campaign.

Tufts was outshot, nine to six, for only the second time this season and the first since they played Wesleyan on September 26.

The Jumbos play next on Tuesday in their final regular season game of the year when they take on Bowdoin at Bello Field. The winner will earn the #1 seed for the NESCAC regular season. Williams travels to Middlebury on the same day.
