Jaime Kenney, an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011, was named the new men's tennis coach at Tufts University in August of that year.
"We place a high premium on leadership qualities in our hiring decisions and rarely have I been as impressed with what a candidate brings to the table in that regard," Tufts Director of Athletics Bill Gehling said upon Kenney's hiring. "I am very confident that she will build a program we will all be proud of. She is an excellent coach, a great recruiter and a superior team builder. She will be an exceptional addition to our staff."
Kenney was an assistant coach on the Tufts women's tennis team under head coach Kate Bayard from 2009-11. When Bayard was pregnant with her first child during the 2010-11 season, Kenney took over full coaching duties during the post-season and helped the Jumbos earn their first-ever berth into the NCAA Quarterfinals. Tufts Women's Tennis enjoyed the finest two seasons in program history during Kenney’s tenure as assistant coach.
"Having already worked at Tufts for the past two years, I fully appreciate all that Tufts is," Kenney said. "I am familiar with the diverse community and overwhelming sense of individual and community pride students and faculty share. I am proud and excited to be part of a community in which an elite athlete is supported, mentored and encouraged to achieve many personal bests in all aspects of their college experience."
Kenney and her family live in Hingham, Massachusetts. She is a 1996 graduate of UMass Boston and has held numerous leadership positions in the local tennis community. In addition to head coaching posts at Hingham High School and Milton Academy, where her teams combined to win six league championships, Kenney has been a Director of Tennis as well as a Tennis Professional at two prestigious clubs in the area.
In her first season as head coach of the Tufts men’s team in 2011-12, Kenney led the Jumbos to a winning record. Eight team members earned ITA Scholar Athletes honors. The Jumbos also received the ITA All-Academic Team award for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Coach Kenney's first recruiting class was ranked eighth nationally by division3tennis.com. The Class of 2016 recruits immediately added talent to the Jumbo roster, including three players projected to start during the 2012-13 season.
"Coach Kenney really emphasizes the importance of team cohesiveness," team tri-captain Andrew Lutz said. "We are individual players, but at the end of the day, we are on one team with one goal."
Administratively at Tufts, Kenney directs the Athletics Department's Fan the Fire initiative, which celebrates Jumbo Pride and the dedication to active citizenship at Tufts by promoting school spirit and raising awareness for important causes at Jumbo athletic events.
