|Robert Jones was one of three Jumbo qualifiers in the 100 meters|
WILLIAMSTOWN - Sophomores Josh Etkind and Anthony Kardonsky of the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team both won their preliminary races as the Jumbos began competition at the 2017 New England Division III Championships hosted by Williams College on Friday.
Etkind won the 110-meter hurldes prelmis with a 14.67 time and Kardonsky was first in the 100-meter dash heats with a time of 10.98 seconds. Both advanced to Saturday's finals.
In the 100 dash, senior Blake Coolidge and freshman Robert Jones will both join Kardonsky in the final. Coolidge was right behind Kardonsky with an 11.02 qualifying mark for second. Jones' 11.12 was seventh in the prelims. The 100 final is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. on Saturday.
Etkind will be joined by sophomore Henry Hintermeister in the 110-hurdles final. Hintermeister ran a career-best 15.67 on Friday to qualify sixth. The final is Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
The Jumbos did not score any team points on Friday as finals were held in the hammer throw, long jump and 10,000 meters. Graduate student Ife Adebayo placed 11th in the hammer throw with a 149'2" (45.46m) toss. Graduate student Michael Paloian was 17th in the event with a 142'2" (43.33m) mark.
In the long jump, junior Shant Mahrokhian finished in 12th place with a best jump of 20'8" (6.3m).
The Jumbos did not have any entries in the 10,000 meter run. The javelin throw was scheduled to be contested on Friday, but was moved to Saturday due to poor weather conditions.
The meet resumes at 10 a.m. in the field events and 11 a.m. in the track events on Saturday at Williams College.
