Four Jumbos Finish Off Cross Country Season At Mayor's Cup
|Senior Cliff Bargar capped his collegiate career at the Mayor's Cup
BOSTON - Four members of the Tufts men's cross country team closed out their 2011 season in the Mayor's Cup at Franklin Park on Sunday. With less than five members of the team competing, the Jumbos did not assemble a team score.
Sophomores Brandon Wheeler (Scotch Plains, NJ) and Peter Lewis (Charlotte, NC) and freshman Justin Rheingold (Potomac, MD) competed in the eight-kilometer race, while senior Cliff Bargar (Newton, MA) ran in the five-kilometer event. The highly competitive field consisted of many top club athletes from the Northeast.
David Nightingale of New York Athletic Club won the 8K race with an impressive time of 23:46. The first Tufts runner across the line was Brandon Wheeler, finishing in 127th place of 197 competitors with a time of 27:23. Lewis and Rheingold finished back-to-back in 160th and 161st with times of 28:30 and 28:32 respectively.
In the five-kilometer race, Bargar capped off his collegiate cross country career by clocking a time of 17:47, good enough for 47th place out of 250 competitors.
With some solid performances and few good months of training under their belts, these athletes will look to carry the momentum into the indoor track campaign, which begins December 3.
For the top 15 runners on Coach Ethan Barron's Jumbo squad, the attention now shifts to the championship races, which begin next Saturday with the NESCAC Championship hosted by Amherst College.
