ANNAPOLIS, MD - Led by their A Division boat which lost out on first place in a tie-breaker, the Tufts co-ed sailing team finished seventh out of 18 squads at the four-division Navy Fall Invitational over the weekend.
Senior A skipper Massimo Soriano (New York, NY) was joined by crews Duncan Swain (San Diego, CA) for the first through ninth races, senior Adam Weisman (Chicago, IL) in the 10th through 12th races and junior Madeline Luce (Portland, OR) for the 13th through 18th starts. They tied College of Charleston with a 92 score over 18 races, but Charleston won the head-to-head tie-breaker putting Tufts in second. The Jumbos won the 12th, 16th and 17th races.
In B Division, Tufts had a seventh-place finish with a 126 score in 18 events. Sophomore skipper Will Haeger (Lake Forest, IL) teamed up with Weisman (first through ninth races), Swain (10th through 12th) and sophomore Paula Grasberger (Salem, MA) for the final six starts. They were strong early, with wins in the first and fifth races.
In single-handed racing for C and D Divisions, freshman Dan Nickerson (Noank, CT) was seventh and classmate Alec Ruiz-Ramon was 10th respectively. Nickerson, who scored 155, won the first and 10th races. Ruiz-Ramon finished at 163 and won the 16th race.
Yale won the invitational with a 400 score.
