Jumbo Co-ed Sailing Team Earns Berth into National Semi-finals With Seventh Place in New England
CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts co-ed sailing team placed seventh out of 18 teams at the 2012 New England Dinghy Championship on Saturday and Sunday. As a result, they earned one of the region's eight berths into the semi-final round of the Intercollegiate Sailing Associaton (ICSA) Dinghy National Championship.
On Saturday, 12 races were sailed in each division at New England's. A Division sailed in the Harvard fleet and B sailed in the MIT fleet. A westerly gradient breeze suffered from inconsistent velocity early in the day, but steadied as the day wore on.
The conditions on Sunday were similar to Saturday with an unstable westerly ranging from 2-6 knots early in the day. The velocity became steadier in the 4-8 knot range later in the day. The racing was incredibly close right up to the very end. Harvard, Roger Williams, Yale, Dartmouth, Boston College, Boston University, Tufts and Brown earned national qualifying sports.
Overall, 18 races were held in the two divisions. Tufts compiled finishes totaling 158 in A's and 114 in B's for a 272 final score. The Jumbos were 10th in A Division and fourth in B.
The B division team of senior skipper Massimo Soriano (New York, NY) with junior crew Madeline Luce (Portland, OR) won the 13th race and had seconds in the second, ninth and 12th outings.
The semi-finals for the 2012 ICSA Dinghy Nationals will be held May 12-13 in Annapolis, Maryland.
