GALVESTON, Texas - Junior Alp Rodopman of the Tufts University sailing team finished sixth out of 18 at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Single-handed Championships held Saturday and Sunday.
In 14 total races, Rodopman compiled finishes leading to a 107 score. He was four points in front of seventh-place Malcolm Lamphere from Yale (111). The Jumbo junior was 18 points behind fifth-place recipient Stefano Peschiera from College of Charleston.
Boston College freshman Scott Rasmussen won the single-handed national championship with an 81 score.
After finishing ninth among the field of 18 in his first race, and then seventh in the second, Rodopman used a consistent stretch of racing to get into the top half of the competitors. He was either fourth or fifth in six of the next eight races on Saturday. He was fourth after one day of competition.
Rodopman would drop two places during four Sunday races. He had finishes of 12th, eighth, 12th and 11th during the day.
The natoinal championship regatta was contested at Offatts Bayou, a small body of water next to the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston, Texas. Saturday was warm and breezy, with flat water in a shifty 7-14 knots. Sunday was breezy and overcast as sailors completed the final four races from 10:00am until 12:30pm.
Rodopman won the New England single-handed title back in September.
