Co-ed Jumbos Sail to Victory at Northeastern University's Oberg Trophy

Sandy Beatty skippered Tufts to a win in A division

BOSTON - Senior skipper Sandy Beatty and senior crew Liz Fletcher won A division to lead the Tufts University co-ed sailing team to first place out of 11 teams at the three-division Oberg Trophy hosted by Northeastern University on Saturday and Sunday.

In 11 races, the Jumbo A's compiled a score of 34 highlighted by first-place finishes in the third, seventh and eighth races. They were second in the first, fifth and 11th starts. Tufts' 34 score was seven better than Brown's 41 for second in the A division.

Tufts' B team of senior skipper Alex Tong with senior crew Caroline Ambros and sophomore crew Nick Giacobbe scored even lower for the 11 races with a 31 total, but they were second behind Roger Williams (24) in the division. Ambros crewed the first and second races before Giacobbe worked the rest. The Jumbo B dinghy won the third and ninth races and were second in the first, second, fourth, sixth and 10th.

For C's, Tufts was fourth with a 46 score. The pair of junior skipper Julien Guiot with senior crew Sam Gates won the seventh C race and took second in the sixth and ninth starts.

The 34-31-46 scoring line for Tufts added up to 111, ahead of the University of Vermont's second-place total of 134. Roger Williams placed third at 136.
