President Monaco, Tufts Trustees Host Commencement Event for Softball Seniors Headed to Virginia

MEDFORD - Lena Cantone (Southington, VT), Katherine Darveau (Reading, MA), Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus, NJ) and Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) "graduated early" on Tuesday as Tufts President Anthony P. Monaco hosted a commencement ceremony for the Jumbo softball team seniors who will be traveling to Salem, Va., this weekend.

Tufts won an NCAA Regional at Eastern Connecticut State University last weekend to qualify to play at the NCAA Finals in Virginia starting on Friday. Tournament play will prevent the team's seniors from attending Tufts' Commencement ceremonies on Sunday.

On Tuesday in the Coolidge Room at Ballou Hall on the Tufts campus, President Monaco offered his congratulations and inspiring words to these scholar-athletes, their teammates, friends and family. The seniors were dressed in their caps and gowns.

Bill O'Reilly Jr., Vice Chair of the Tufts Board of Trustees, and Trustee Brian Kavoogian also attended the ceremony.

The graduation ceremony for Tufts scholar-athletes who miss Commencement due to competitions has become a tradition. The 2009 Tufts softball team, the 2010 men's lacrosse team and the 2011 men's lacrosse team all graduated at events hosted by prior Tufts President Lawrence J. Bacow.

Coach Cheryl Milligan's 2012 softball team begins play at the NCAA Finals against Roanoke on Friday at 6:30 pm.
