Horowitz Drills Three-Run Homer for Softball in 12-4 Victory over Worcester State on Thursday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Tufts University softball team posted nine first-inning runs during a 12-4 triumph over Worcester State in a five-inning game on Thursday in Clermont, Florida.

Carrie Copacino chipped in with an RBI and a run scored for the Jumbos.

The Jumbos (5-4) were led by senior first baseman Summer Horowitz (home run, four RBIs, two runs scored) and freshman third baseman Jamie Stevens (1-for-3, double, two RBIs, two runs scored). The Lancers (1-6) were led by junior Sydney Despres, and seniors Corrie Derosier and Dakota Smith-Porter, as each individual belted a pair of hits.

Senior left fielder Maggie Hoffman (single, RBI, run scored) continues to be productive for the Jumbos, as she leads the team in hits (18), RBIs (10), batting average (.692), on-base percentage (.704) and slugging percentage (1.038).

The Lancers jumped on the scoreboard first, as Despres clubbed a two-out solo homer to center field in the top of the first.

To say that Jumbos responded is an understatement. Stevens, Hoffman and senior captain Cassie Ruscz displayed patience at the plate, as all three athletes reached base on walks, loading the bases with no one out. Junior right fielder Raven Fournier was hit by a pitch, allowing Stevens to cross home plate, evening the score, 1-1.

Horowitz reached on an error, as she plated Hoffman, and then junior Raina Galbiati recorded an RBI single to center field, as Ruscz touched home plate, making the score 3-1. The runs kept crossing home plate, as Fournier and Horowitz scored with one out, and then Stevens drilled a two-run double to right center, plating junior catcher Sarah Finnigan and Galbiati, giving the Jumbos a 7-1 advantage.

Hoffman did damage during her second time in the batter's box, as she drove a one-run single to left center, scoring senior center fielder Carrie Copacino. Ruscz then doubled to the gap in right center, allowing Stevens to cross home plate, as the Jumbos took a commanding 9-1 lead.

The Lancers trimmed the deficit to 9-2 in the top of the third, as Smith-Porter crossed home on a one-out RBI single by freshman Kaiulani Ennis to left field. The Jumbos extended their lead to double digits with a three-run effort in the bottom of the third.

Senior Shelby Lipson drew a one-out walk, and then Ruscz's composure in the box allowed her to reach base on a walk for the second time. With two outs in the inning, Horowitz stepped up to the plate and crushed a three-run blast to left field, giving the Jumbos a 12-2 lead.

The Lancers mounted a little bit of a comeback in the top of the fourth, as Smith-Porter posted a one-out RBI single up the middle, scoring sophomore Haley Scola from third base, and then Derosier scored on an RBI by senior Courtney Salisbury, trimming the deficit to 12-4.

The Lancers needed to score at least one run in the top half of the fifth inning to extend the game, but sophomore Amolee Hawkins pitched scoreless innings in the fourth and the fifth for the Jumbos to seal the victory. Galbiati was credited with the win in the diamond, as she improved to 4-0 on the season.
