MEDFORD - Hitting a spectacular .909 (10-11) in three games for the Tufts University softball team last week, senior outfielder Maggie Hoffman has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week.
Hoffman didn't play for the Jumbos in the season-opener against Plymouth State University in Florida on Saturday, but she was nearly perfect at the plate for the rest of the weekend. In addition to going 10 for 11, she had three doubles, a home run, scored five runs and drove home four.
In Sunday's pair of games against Buffalo State and Clarkson, Hoffman was a combined 8 for 8 with three doubles, a home run, five runs scored and three rbis. On Saturday against #7 Linfield College, she finished 2 for 3 with an rbi.
On Friday, Hoffman's rbi single pulled the Jumbos within 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth against Linfield. In the 11-3 win over Buffalo State on Saturday, she singled and scored in the first, hit a run-scoring single in Tufts' five-run second inning and then homered scoring two in the fourth inning. Against Clarkson, she singled in the first, doubled and scored in the third, doubled again in the fourth and singled in the fifth.
Hoffman is making the most of her playing time for the Jumbos. After seeing action sparingly as a freshman and sophomore, she appeared in 29 games last season hitting .292 with two home runs and 12 rbis.
This is Hoffman's first conference Player of the Week award. It comes in the first week of the 2017 season after five Jumbo players and pitchers were honored by the conference last year.
