Softball Improves to 4-0 in Florida with 9-3 Win Against Rutgers-Camden

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Tufts University softball team took advantage of four costly errors by Rutgers University-Camden to score eight unearned runs during a 9-3 victory over the Pioneers in Florida on Sunday.

Junior 1B Casey Maggiore hit Tufts' first home run of the spring to lead off the second inning. The Jumbos would go on to score seven times (six unearned) in the inning as senior LF Kristen Caporelli hit two-run double and Maggiore added a run-scoring double in her second at bat.

The Pioneers, playing their season opener, had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Junior 1B Marissa Beebe led off with a single and scored on a single by junior 3B Rachel Edwards. A Tufts error then allowed Edwards to score.

Rutgers-Camden got another in the third to make it 7-3. Freshman 2B Jordan Howey hit a one-out single and sophomore SS Nina Arroyo and Beebe followed with base hits to load the bags. Senior DH Kendra Pfister got the run home with a ground out to first.

The Jumbos added two more unearned runs in the fifth with the help of two Pioneer errors. Sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe hit an rbi single in the frame.

Junior Gillian O'Connor was the winning pitcher for Tufts giving up seven hits and three runs (two earned) in her complete game. Della Volpe and Maggiore both had two hits for Tufts, while sophomore DH Sofia Molina scored twice.

Beebe and Edwards had two hits for the Pioneers. Sarah Byrnes took the pitching loss while allowing seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Tufts plays Plattsburgh and Grinnell as their week in Florida continues tomorrow. Rutgers-Camden has games against Geneva and Southern Maine on Monday.
