CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore Kristi Van Meter pitched a one-hit shutout for a 1-0 Tufts University softball victory over Ramapo College in Florida on Thursday.
|Sophomore Emma Della Volpe scored the only run of the game.|
Ramapo junior CF Jackie Howarth led off the game with a double, but that would be the only hit that Van Meter allowed. She struck out eight while recording her fourth victory of the spring. She has now pitched 19 straight scoreless innings down south, allowing just five hits in those three games.
Ramapo senior starter Erin Fitzsimmons was nearly as good, allowing just three hits and one run with six K's.
The only run was scored in the bottom of the sixth when Tufts sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe was hit by a pitch to lead off. She was bunted to second by sophomore SS Mia Steinberg. After a strike out, Tufts junior 1B Casey Maggiore delivered an rbi single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
Van Meter set the Roadrunners down in order in the top of the seventh to finish off the win.
Other than Howarth's double, Van Meter did not allow a base runner to reach second. She had a walk and a hit by pitch, and another Ramapo batter reached by error.
Tufts had runners on first and second with no outs in the first including a base hit by Della Volpe. However, Fitzsimmons retired the next three in a row. Senior RF Kristen Caporelli led off the Tufts fourth with a double, but the Jumbos could not get her home.
Tufts (10-0) plays Wisconsin-Superior and St. Olaf in Florida on Friday. Ramapo, who dropped to 5-5 with the loss, will finish their spring trip tomorrow with games against Allegheny and Bowdoin.
