Wisconsin-Stout Rallies for 12-10 Win in Extra Innings of Softball's Florida Finale

CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Stout scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to complete a 12-10 comeback victory over the Tufts University softball team on Sunday in Florida.

Maria Ostapovich hit her first career home run in the game.

The game was the end of Tufts' week in Florida, which they finished with an excellent 13-2 record. The Blue Devils, who won after trailing 7-0 in the fifth inning, improved to 5-3.

Two-run home runs by junior 3B Jamie Stevens in the second inning and junior RF Maria Ostapovich in the fifth inning helped the Jumbos take their 7-0 lead. Junior CF Maggie Lebinsi and sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe also hit back-to-back doubles for a run in the fourth.

UW-Stout started its comeback with three runs in the sixth when a pair of Jumbo errors and a wild pitch aided the cause. The Blue Devils would take an 8-7 lead by scoring five times in the top of the seventh. Junior CF Mary Iliopoulos hit a two-run double and scored, and senior Kyncaide Diedrich singled home a run, stole two bases and scored in the inning. Senior 3B Alicia Meyer also had an rbi double.

Down a run in their last at bat, the Jumbos tied it quickly as Ostapovich led off with a double and scored. The Jumbos had the bases loaded with two outs, but could not get the winning run home.

With the tie-breaker rule in effect, UW-Stout's four-run eighth inning was keyed by Iliopoulos' two-run single. Trailing 12-8 in the bottom of the eighth, the Jumbos scored twice as senior 3B Christian Cain doubled home a run and scored on a sac fly. Blue Devils sophomore pitcher Melea Bruns stopped the damage there and got a save.

There were a combined 25 hits in the game, including 15 by Tufts. Lebinski was 3 for 3 with a run, Stevens finished 2 for 4 with three rbis and two runs, and Ostapovich was 2 for 3 with two rbis and two runs.

Iliopoulos was 2 for 4 with four rbis and two runs scored at the top of the Blue Devils' order. Meyer finished 2 for 4 with three rbis and Diedrich went 2 for 5 with two runs and an rbi.

Junior Gillian O'Connor was the losing pitcher for Tufts. Sophomore Sommer Kunstmann got the win for the Blue Devils.

The Jumbos return home and play Bates in a three-game NESCAC East series starting on Friday. UW-Stout is early in their Florida week and play the University of Minnesota Morris later on Sunday.
