MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's fencing team won by 7-2 scores in each weapon to defeat Yeshiva University from New York City, 21-6, in a season-opening tri-meet at Jackson Gymnasium on Sunday. The Jumbos also lost to Stevens Tech 16-11 and against Wellesley College 14-13 at the meet.

In the sabre weapon against Yeshiva, sophomore Daphne Kolios (Mendham, NJ) and first year Julia Hisey each won all three of their matches. In the foil competition, senior Magda Kwieciszewska (Mahway, NJ) was the winner in all three of her bouts. For epee, both first year Laurel Hutchison (San Francisco, CA) and sophomore Abi Hepworth (Garden City, NY) went 3-0.

In the narrow defeat to Wellesley, the Jumbos won epee 5-4 with seniors Georgia Ranes (Henderson, NV) and Carolyn Wolk (Narbeth, PA) both winning twice. Wellesley dominated foil 9-0, but Tufts won 8-1 in sabre. Sabres Catherine Bowlus (Tokyo, Japan) and Hisey both won all three of their bouts.

Against Stevens, Tufts had 5-4 wins in both epee and sabre, but lost 8-1 in foil. Wolk and Ranes both won two out of three in epee, while junior Brianna Smith (Waxahachie, TX) was 3-0 in sabre.
