Women's Fencing Defeats Hunter, Loses to Johns Hopkins and Penn at Brandeis Invitational

Sophomore Laurel Hutchison fenced in both epee and foil for Tufts

WALTHAM - The Tufts women's fencing team won one out of their three matches at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University on Saturday. The Jumbos defeated Hunter 19-8, while dropping matches to Johns Hopkins 18-9 and Penn 22-5.

In the win against Hunter, the Jumbos won seven matches in both the epee and sabre weapons and five in foil. Sabre's four wins was the top performance against Johns Hopkins, while for the Penn match three wins came from sabre.

The top Tufts scorers from Saturday were sophomore sabreist Julia Hisey (Carlisle, MA) with six victories, senior sabreist Sarah Danly (Potomac, MD) with five victories and sophomore epeeist/foilist Laurel Hutchison (San Francisco, CA) with five victories.

Hutchison fenced epee versus Penn and Hunter, but foil against Haverford. Coach Ariana Klinkov made the change in the line up hoping Hutchison could contribute victories to the young foil squad.

The Jumbos now have a 3-7 record for the season. They compete next in a conference meet at UMass on Saturday.
