Tufts Women's Fencers Win One Out of Three at UMass Conference Meet

Sarah Danly was one of the top winners for Tufts at UMass

AMHERST - The Tufts women's fencing team defeated Wellesley, but lost to Sacred Heart and Boston College in a conference meet held at UMass-Amherst on Saturday.

The Jumbos topped Wellesley 15-12, led by a 9-0 record in the epee weapon. The sabre squad added five victories. In a 17-10 loss to Sacred Heart, it was the sabres who led the way with an 8-1 record. Both epee and sabre won four matches in an 18-9 loss against Boston College.

The top fencer of the day for Tufts was sophomore Julia Hisey (Carlisle, MA), who had seven wins in sabre. Both senior sabreist Sarah Danly (Potomac, MD) and first-year epeeist Katharine Lynch (Centereach, NY) won six times for the Jumbos. Junior epeeist Abby Hepworth (Garden City, NY) finished with five wins.

Now 4-9 overall, Tufts fences next at the conference championship meet hosted by Vassar College on February 25.
