|Chandler Coble had four wins overall in epee action|
MEDFORD - The 2016-17 Tufts University women's fencing season finished up on Sunday as seven team members competed at the NCAA Regionals hosted by Yale University.
Senior co-captains Anna Gooch and Chandler Coble along with junior Grace Tellado qualified in the epee weapon. Juniors Bridget Marturano and Nayab Ajaz were in the saber division and senior Juliet Hewes with sophomore Zoe Howard competed in foil.
Both Hewes and Howard out-performed their rankings prior to entering the meet. Hewes, seeded 34th in foil, finished 29th on Sunday. She was a perfect 4-0 in the first round pool where she was + 12 in touches (20 scored - eight received). She was eliminated in second round pool play. Howard also advanced out of the first round and had a 32nd place finish that was three above her #35 Regional ranking entering the day.
Marturano posted the highest finish in her weapon for the Jumbos, taking 23rd in saber after entering as the 24th seed. She had two wins in the second round and was even in touches. Ajaz placed 38th in saber.
Coble had the best showing in epee, placing 32nd after entering at #34. She won three first-round matches to move on to the second round. Gooch, 2-2 in the opening round, just missed advancing to the second pool and was 36th overall. Tellado placed 39th in epee.
There is no team scoring at the NCAA Regional.
