Tufts Women Split 6 Matches at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet on Saturday

Georgia Kollias had success in her foil matches today

NORTHAMPTON - With wins over Boston University (17-8), the University of New Hampshire (18-9) and the University of Massachusetts (17-10), the Tufts University women's team split its six matches at a Northeast Fencing Conference meet hosted by Smith College on Saturday.

Tufts' losses came against host Smith (17-10), Sacred Heart University (17-10) and Wellesley College (18-9).

In the victory over BU, Tufts had a 7-2 win in the foil weapon. They were down 2-1 after one round, but won all three matches in the second and third rounds. Freshman Georgia Kollias was 3-0 against the Terriers.

A 17-10 win over UMass included victories by a 9-0 score in foil and 7-2 in sabre. Jumbo senior Bridget Marturano was 3-0 in the sabre bouts.

The loss to Smith came next. The lone weapon win for Tufts was in sabre. The Jumbos led 4-2 after two rounds and then held on as senior Nayab Ajaz clinched the 5-4 win in the third round.

The Jumbos won 5-4 in both foil and sabre against Sacred Heart though they lost in the overall count. In foil they led 5-1 after two rounds to assure the win as senior co-captain Julia O'Gara, sophomore Zoe Howard and Kollias all won their first-round bouts and O'Gara and Kollias were winners in the second round. Ajaz and Marturano both won in the third round to break a 3-3 tie and give Tufts the weapon win.

Versus UNH, the Jumbos had an 8-1 foil victory and a 7-2 sabre final to lead the way. Freshman Lillie Ahearn added a victory to the sabre total. Junior Annie Ayala scored three wins in the epee rounds.

In the final match of the day against Wellesley, Tufts' 5-4 sabre win again saw Ajaz and Marturano win in the third round breaking a 3-3 tie.

The Jumbos will be in action again on February 24 at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championships hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
