Women's Sailing 4th at Cornell's 1st Annual Susan Rogers '75 Memorial Regatta

Freshman Charlotte Lenz skippered in B's for Tufts

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Tufts women's sailing team went out of region over the weekend to compete at the 1st Annual Susan Rogers '75 Memorial Regatta held Saturday and Sunday at Cornell University out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center. The Jumbos placed fourth out of 14 teams.

In two divisions with 10 races each, Tufts scored 46 in A's and 62 in B's for a 108 total. They were 19 behind third-place host Cornell (89) and 17 in front of fifth-place Vermont (125).

The Tufts A team of junior Molly Pleskus as skipper and sophomore Sabrina van Mell as crew was third in their division. They won the seventh race and had seconds in the first and fourth.

Freshman Charlotte Lenz started at skipper for the Jumbo B boat with junior Michelle Chisdak as crew. They were sixth in B's with a best finish of third in the third race.

Teams arrived at 9 am Saturday to a SE breeze slowly building. The A division hit the water and by the time they made it to the racing area there was plenty of breeze around 10mph. The wind was shifting quite a bit, coming directly from the East and going as far right as SW.

Sunday had a similar start with a slow trickle of breeze filling in from the SE. By 9:45 am the breeze had filled in nicely. The first race of the day was under overcast skies and about a 6-8mph wind. The breeze eventually strengthened to a steady 10mph, and ticked more toward the South. All weekend was flat water shifty racing.

The team from Hobart and William Smith College won the regatta with 33-36-69 scores.
