Jumbo Women's Sailing 6th of 17 at Annual Mrs. Hurst Bowl

Sabrina van Mell crewed for Tufts' B team

ENFIELD, N.H. - The 16th-ranked Tufts University women's sailing team had a strong sixth-place showing out of 17 teams at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl hosted by Dartmouth on Saturday and Sunday.

The Jumbos nearly finished in the top five teams, but lost a head-to-head tie-breaker against Yale. Tufts scored 113 in A division and 119 in B's for a 232 total. Tufts and Yale were a distant 45 points behind fourth-place Boston College (187), while scoring 36 better than host Dartmouth in seventh place (268). Coast Guard won the regatta with a 66-81-147 scoring line.

Tufts placed sixth among the A division contestants. Senior MaryClaire Kiernan skippered with classmate Julia Fuller as crew. They won the third and 10th races and took third place in the fourth start.

In B's, junior Molly Pleskus skippered with sophomore Sabrina van Mell as crew. They started strong with wins in the first and fourth races. They also had thirds in the fifth, 12th and 16th starts.

Saturday was a wet day of sailing on Mascoma Lake with 10 races completed in both A and B division. A NW breeze from 7-15 knots prevailed. In all 16 races were completed in both A and B Division for the 2016 Mrs Hurst Bowl. Courses were W4s all weekend.
