No. 19 Women's Squash Falls to No. 17 Amherst, 7-2, in Season Opener

AMHERST – Junior Zarena Jafry and senior Lauren Banner picked up wins for the Jumbos, but it wasn't enough as No. 17 ranked Amherst dealt the No. 19 ranked Jumbos a 7-2 setback on Friday night. 

Zarena Jafry was one of two Jumbos to win against Amherst Friday.

The match was the first of the season for the Jumbos and the Mammoths.  

Jafry won in the third position, winning a hard fought battle with Amherst's Haley McAtee.  Jafry lost the first game before coming back to win the next two before McAtee took the fourth.  Jafry won the deciding fifth game to seal the win, 8-11, 13-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8.  In the sixth position Banner also won a hard fought match over her Mammoth counterpart.  Banner also lost the first game, came back and won two, only to fall in the fourth and win the fifth (3-11, 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8). 

In the first position freshman Julie Yeung lost a hard fought five game battle with Riddhi Sampat, 5-11, 11-7, 11-4, 7-11, 11-8.  Sophomore Claire Davidson pushed two of her three games to extra points, but ended up falling in the second position, 15-13, 11-4, 16-14.  In the fourth position freshman Rachel Windreich made her collegiate debut, but fell to Madison Chen, 11-5, 11-8, 11-5.  Sophomore Catherine Shanahan played in the fifth position but wasn't able to beat Amherst's Caroline Conway (11-2, 11-6, 11-9). 

Junior Sahana Karthik, junior captain Chista Irani and freshman Chloe Kantor rounded out the Jumbos lineup in the seventh through ninth positions, but all three Jumbos fell in three games to their Amherst opponents. 

The Jumbos are back in action on Saturday as they host Mount Holyoke at 12 pm and Hamilton at 5 pm.  Both matches will be played at the Belmont Hill School.
