Tufts Women's Tennis Advances to Second Round of Nor'Easter Bowl With Win Over MIT

WALTHAM - Facing MIT in the opening round of the Wellesley College 2012 Nor'Easter Bowl, the Tufts women's tennis team dominated singles and took an 8-1 victory over the Engineers in a match played at Brandeis University on Friday afternoon.

Coach Kate Bayard's Jumbo team advances to the semi-finals, where they will play at Wellesley on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm. Top seed Amherst will play fifth-seed Skidmore in the other semi-final on Saturday. The winners will meet in the Nor'Easter Bowl championship match on Sunday at 9 am.

Tufts led MIT 2-1 after doubles and then won all six singles matches in straight sets. The Jumbos did not lose more than three games in 11 of the 12 sets. Tufts is third in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast rankings, while MIT is eighth.

Jumbo junior Janice Lam (San Franciso, CA) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the #5 singles match. Senior Nathalie Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) lost just two games in the sixth match, including a 6-0 second set. Sophomore Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) paired a 6-1 win with an opening-set 6-3 victory in the second match.

In doubles play, sophomore Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and classmate Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) were the top Tufts twosome with an 8-2 victory on the third court.
