|Janice Lam dominated the #6 singles match for Tufts
MEDFORD - Jumbos Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC), Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY), Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) and Janice Lam (San Franciso, CA) all had a hand in doubles and singles victories as the #13 Tufts women's tennis team finished its 2011-12 regular-season with a 7-2 win against #28 Trinity College on Sunday at Voute Courts.
The Jumbos will now await their seeding in the upcoming NESCAC Championship to be played at Williams College starting next Friday. Tufts is 8-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Trinity, also likely to earn one of the six conference berths, is now 10-5 and 4-3.
Tufts swept the three doubles matches with relative ease. The #2 pair of Gann and Lam were 8-2 winners, while Schonfeld and Kimmel combined for an 8-3 final in the third doubles match. Junior Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) defeated Bantams Hillary Hoyt and Senzo Maphisa 8-5 in #1 play.
The Jumbos were able to secure the team victory fairly quickly in singles play. Gann at #4, Kimmel at #5 and Lam at #6 all won in straight sets, with Lam losing just one game and Gann surrendering only three.
Trinity scored its two wins at #1 and #3. Katz had to retire early in the #1 match for Tufts, giving the win to Hoyt. Bantam Kelsey Semrod took a 10-5 super tie-breaker over Bowman on the third court. Schonfield also won a third-set super tie-breaker at #2 for Tufts.
The win stopped a four-match losing streak by Tufts.
