MEDFORD - In a challenging, busy day against two of NESCAC's top teams, the #17 Tufts women's tennis team couldn't maintain its momentum from an earlier win over sixth-ranked Bowdoin on Saturday as they lost 7-2 to #2 Williams College in the second match of the day.
The Jumbos had posted a convincing 7-2 win over the Polar Bears in a match that started at 10 am. Bowdoin had just defeated Williams a week ago, 6-3. However, in a 4 pm start against the Jumbos, the visiting Ephs swept the doubles matches and won two of the first three singles matches to secure the victory.
Tufts' #1 doubles pair of Lauren Louks and Mina Karamercan had defeated a nationally-ranked doubles pair from Bowdoin earlier in the day. Against Williams' #6-ranked duo of Juli Raventos and Linda Shin, the Tufts team was again very competitive before losing 8-6. Jumbos Otilia Popa and Zoe Miller also lost a competitive third match 8-6 and Williams led 3-0 heading into singles.
Julia Cancio extended the visitors' lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win in fifth singles. Karamercan held off Williams with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #2 against Mia Gancayco in a match between two top 50 players. However, Shin, the #12-ranked singles player in DIII, beat Conner Calabro at #3 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the team win for Williams.
Louks, ranked 30th, lost 6-4, 6-3 to #8 Raventos in the #1 match. Jumbo Tomo Iwasaki played out a 2-6, 6-4, 10-3 win at #4 over Hannah Atkinson. Eph Leah Bush won the final match on 6-4, 7-5 against Miller.
Tufts dropped to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in NESCAC with the loss. Williams is now 16-3 and 6-1 NESCAC. This was the last match of the regular-season for both teams. They will now await NESCAC Championship seedings to be released next week. The 2016 NESCAC Championship will be played May 6-8 at Bates College.
