Women’s Tennis Totals Four Victories at the Three-Day ITA Regional Tournament

Conner Calabro won a singles match during the three-day event.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Tufts University women's tennis team collected four victories in the 64-player singles bracket during its season-opening event at the ITA Regional Tournament on Friday-Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sophomore Mina Karamercan posted a pair of victories and represented the Jumbos in the third round of the singles bracket Saturday at MIT. 

Second-seeded Juli Raventos of Williams was the champion of the singles bracket, while the second-seeded pairing of Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu of Wesleyan came away victorious in the championship round of the doubles bracket. 

Raventos defeated top-seeded Chong during the final round of the single bracket, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Raventos posted a straight-set victory over eighth-seeded Vickie Ip of Amherst in the semifinals. Chong and Yu outlasted the top-seeded pairing of Raventos and Linda Shin of Williams, 8-6, during the championship round of the doubles bracket. Chong and Yu defeated Jackie Calla and Avery Wagman of Amherst in the semifinal round, 8-3. 

Karamercan (2-2), senior captain Conner Calabro (1-2), freshman Katherine Wiley (1-2), sophomore Julia Keller (0-1) and freshman Afua Ofori-Darko (0-1) all competed in the tournament for the Jumbos. 

Seventh-seeded Karamercan posted back-to-back victories Friday, as she defeated Valentina Medina of Suffolk, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round, and then outlasted Haley Cohen of Brandeis, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round. Calabro defeated Gabriela Venditti of Colby in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round. Wiley posted a victory in her first collegiate match, by defeating Abbie Denney of Gordon, 6-4, 6-2, during first-round action. 

The Jumbos will now set their sights on the Bowdoin Invitational, which will be held in Brunswick, Maine, on Oct. 14-15. The Jumbos will then be off during the winter months, as they will prepare for the spring portion of their schedule.
