WELLESLEY – No. 7 Tufts University swept past No. 25 Wellesley College tennis, earning a 9-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. The Jumbos even their record at 1-1 on the season, while Wellesley is 3-4 overall after dropping a pair of top-25 match-ups this weekend.
Tufts opened the match with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 Doubles, as seniors Lauren Louks and Zoe Miller downed Wellesley first year Michelle Buyer and junior Sojin Ki. The Jumbos completed the doubles sweeps with matching 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 1. Tufts' winning pairs were Otilia Popa and Mina Karamercan at #1 and Patricia Obeid with Kat Wiley in second doubles.
Tufts closed out the match by sweeping the singles matches, which included competitive contests at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 Singles. Louks shook off Wellesley's Selina Peng at No. 2, winning the opening set 6-3 before holding off the Blue sophomore, 6-4, to win the match in two. At No. 3, Karamercan needed three sets to down Wellesley first year Lizzy Kong after Kong and Karamercan split the opening sets. Kong took the opener 6-2, but Karamercan rallied for a 6-0 sweep in set two to tie the match. Kong rebounded to start the third set, as she built a 4-1 lead. However, Karamercan rallied again, coming all the way back to take the match with a 6-4 set-three win.
Tufts sophomore Afua Ofori-Darko jumped to a one set lead over Wellesley sophomore Korina Hernandez with a 6-4 win in the opening set at No. 6, but it would take a second set tiebreak to prevent a third game, as the two battled back and forth again. In the end, Ofori-Darko nabbed the victory with a 7-5 win in the breaker.
