Win Over Marymount Closes Out New England Invitational Play for Volleyball

MEDFORD – Rounding out play in The New England Invitational the No. 23 Tufts volleyball team downed visiting Marymount 3-0 on Saturday evening in Cousens Gym.

Sophomore Kelly Klimo turned in 46 digs in two matches Saturday

With the win the Jumbos improve to 3-1 on the season.  They picked up a win against RIT on Friday in Invitational play and then fell to Minnesota Morris in a close five set match earlier on Saturday.  The Marymount Saints fall to 4-4 with the setback.

With things tied at nine in the first set the Jumbos scored six points behind the serve of freshman Jennifer Ryan to take a 14-9 lead. That advantage would be too much for the Saints to overcome and the Jumbos picked up the 25-18 win in set one.

The second set was extremely close as the two teams battled and traded the lead, with neither team ever leading by more than two points.  With the Saints up 24-22 the Jumbos got kills from sophomore Christina Nwankpa, sophomore Brigid Bell and Angela Yu and a Saint error helped the Jumbos pick up the 26-24 win in set two.

The Jumbo took an early 6-0 lead in the third set and never looked back picking up the 25-13 win in the set to secure the 3-0 win.

Bell finished with a match-high nine kills for the Jumbos and Bright added eight with Nwankpa finishing with seven.  Sophomore Kelly Klimo picked up 16 digs and junior Angela Yu added ten of her own.  Ryan chipped in three blocks for the Jumbos.  Yu and sophomore Rachel Furash took care of the setting, finishing with 19 and 12 assists, respectively.

For the Saints Emily Abramaitys was the offensive leader with eight kills while Caroline Hanson added six kills and ten digs.  Maggie Viniard turned in 12 digs and took care of the setting for the Saints, finishing with 22 assists.

The Saints are back in action on Wednesday when they host Stevenson at 7 pm.  The Jumbos play again on Friday when they open up NESCAC play hosting Bates with an 8 pm start.
