Jumbo Women's Cross Country Earns At-Large Berth Into 2011 NCAA Championship Race
MEDFORD - The Tufts women's cross country team received one of 16 at-large berths into the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship Race which will be held on Saturday (Nov. 19) at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, WI. The race will begin at 11 am CT.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in the NCAA Championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regional races, for a total of 16 teams. On Sunday, 16 additional teams were selected at-large including the Jumbos.
Coach Kristen Morwick's team finished fifth at the NCAA Regional Championship hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday. The Jumbos will join Amherst, Middlebury, MIT, and Williams as the five New England teams to run at Nationals.
Leading Tufts at the NCAA race will be three runners who earned All-Region recognition on Saturday. Senior tri-captain Anya Price (Natick, MA) led the way for Tufts, placing 23rd by clocking a time of 22:01. Junior tri-captain Lilly Fisher (Kansas City, MO) and sophomore Madeleine Carey (Albuquerque, NM) finished back-to-back in 34th and 35th with times of 22:19 and 22:22 respectively.
Also comprising the starting Tufts seven at Nationals will be sophomore Abby Barker (San Carlos, CA), sophomore Lauren Creath (Corte Madera, CA), junior Julia Hajnoczky (Wallingford, PA), and sophomore Laura Peterson (Melrose, MA). Junior Melanie Monroe (Melrose, MA) will be with the team as an alternate.
Tufts will be making its first team appearance at Nationals since 2006. It will be the first NCAA race for each of the Jumbos making the trip.
