With outstanding talent and a rich tradition, the Tufts University women's cross country program is one of New England's best regardless of division. Now in her 15th season, Coach Kristen Morwick guides a program that annually adds to the long list of athletic and academic achievements compiled by the program since its inception in 1976.
Morwick's Jumbo program has been represented at the NCAA Championship either individually or as a team in each of the last 11 seaons. Last year's squad ran 13th out of the 32 teams which qualified for the NCAA meet. Senior Abby Barker earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American honors. She was the fifth cross country All-American recruited to Tufts by Morwick, including two-time All-Americans Cat Beck, Katy O'Brien and Stephanie McNamara.
In 2012, first-year Audrey Gould placed 68th in the NCAA race, the best finish by a Tufts first-year at the NCAA meet since 2007. Gould was the conference's Rookie of the Year that season. O'Brien was the New England Small College Athletic Conference's 2006 Most Outstanding Performer. Morwick's 2006 Tufts team posted its best-ever finish at the NCAA Championship by taking fifth place.
Jumbo cross country runners are also annually honored for their academic success. Eight team members earned Academic All-NESCAC honors for the 2013 season. Six runners from the 2013 Tufts team received national USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition.
A 1988 graduate of Dartmouth College, Morwick was previously the head coach of cross country / track & field at Williams College. At Dartmouth, Morwick competed in the multi-events and held the high jump record for several years. She was also a member of the basketball team.
