Jumbo Athletics Hosting Homecoming Events This Weekend

MEDFORD - The Tufts University Department of Athletics will celebrate Homecoming this weekend (September 28-30) with several events on campus.

On Friday night (Sept. 28), Tufts Athletics will host its Annual Awards Ceremony featuring the presentation of the Distinguished Achievement Award (DAA) and the 2017-18 Student-Athlete Awards at Cohen Auditorium starting at 7:30 pm. Four Jumbo teams will then play games on Saturday (Sep. 29) in front of Homecoming Day fans, followed by three more home contests on Sunday (Sep. 30).

The Annual Awards Ceremony will feature the presentation of the 2018 Distinguished Achievement Award to Lisa Amatangel, a 1993 Tufts graduate who played for the tennis and squash teams. By summiting Mt. Everest in 2012, Amatangel completed the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge, having climbed the highest peak on each continent.

Also that evening, Tufts Athletics will honor its top performers from a remarkable 2017-18 year in Athletics. NCAA indoor high jump champion Stefan Duvivier of the men's track & field team will receive the Clarence "Pop" Houston Award as Best Male Athlete. The Hester L. Sargent Award for Best Female Athlete will go to Brittany Bowman of the women's cross country and track & field teams, who won the NCAA indoor 5,000 meters title last March.

The Rudolph J. Fobert Awards honoring athletic and academic performance will be given to Conor Coleman from men's soccer and Emily Bowers of women's soccer. Coleman was the NESCAC Player of the Year and the United Soccer Coaches Division III Scholar Player of the Year. Bowers, voted as the New England Small College Athletic Conference's (NESCAC) top goalie for 2017, was also a United Soccer Coaches first team Scholar All-American.

Ben Battle of the men's tennis team and Tori Rudnicki from women's lacrosse, who both persevered through injuries to serve as positive role models to their teams, will accept the Murray J. Kenney Awards for positive attitude and persistence. Spirit, Sports, Service Awards recognizing contributions to Athletics life at Tufts beyond competition will go to Ali Dorneo from women's swimming and Dan Dewing of football.

Phillip Goldberg from the Tufts Daily will also receive the Timothy J. Horgan Award presented annually to the top student sportswriter at Tufts that night.
