MEDFORD - The Tufts University Department of Athletics will celebrate Homecoming October 18-19 with several events on campus.
On Friday night (Oct. 18), Tufts Athletics will host its Annual Awards Ceremony featuring the presentation of the 2018-19 Student-Athlete Awards at Cohen Auditorium starting at 7:30 pm. Five Jumbo teams will play games on campus that weekend as well.
At the Annual Awards Ceremony on Friday night, Tufts Athletics will honor its top performers from a remarkable 2018-19 year in Athletics. NCAA 50 freestyle champion Roger Gu of the men's swimming & diving team will receive the Clarence "Pop" Houston Award as Best Male Athlete. The Hester L. Sargent Award for Best Female Athlete will go to women’s lacrosse’s Dakota Adamec, who was the Division III National Player of the Year in her sport.
The Rudolph J. Fobert Awards honoring athletic and academic excellence will be given to Sterling Weatherbie from men's soccer and Colleen Doolan of women’s swimming & diving. Weatherbie was a D3soccer.com All-American and United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American. Doolan is a national finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year award who competed with a pair of All-American relays.
Evelyn Drake from women’s track & field, a championship thrower who overcame thyroid cancer, will accept the Murray J. Kenney Award for positive attitude and persistence. Spirit, Sports, Service Awards recognizing contributions to Athletics life at Tufts beyond competition will go to Maddy Schwartz from women's lacrosse and Will Shackelford of baseball.
Y.J. Chee from the Tufts Daily will also receive the Timothy J. Horgan Award presented annually to the top student sportswriter at Tufts.
