GORHAM, ME - The Men's Cross Country team saw three of its runners finish in the top 30 as the team took fourth place at NCAA Regional Championship meet in Gorham, Maine on Saturday. Senior Andrew Shapero (Laguna Beach, CA) was the leader for the Jumbos with a 12th place finish.
The fourth place finish will hopefully be good enough for the team to receive an at large bid to the NCAA Championships in Hanover, Indiana next weekend. The fourth place team finish is the best finish since 2007 when the team finished third.
Shapero's time of 25:00 was good for 12th place while fellow classmate Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) was just behind him with a time of 25:16 good for 20th place. Freshman Tim Nichols' (North Lima, OH) time of 25:22 earned him 30th place. Shapero, Wallis and Nichols earned All-New England honors as they finished in the top 35.
Senior Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME) was next for Tufts, finishing in 39th place with a time of 25:38. Rounding out the scoring for the Jumbos was senior Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) whose time of 25:43 earned him 41st place.
The team scoring was as close as can be as Williams finished first with 77 points while Middlebury's 78 points earned them second place. Both those teams receive at large bids to the national meet next weekend. MIT was the third place team with 113 points, followed by the Jumbos with 142 points. Bates rounded out the top five with 158 points in fifth place.
The Jumbos will now wait to see if they are granted an at large bid to continue their season.
