Field Hockey Earns Convincing 3-0 NESCAC Win over Connecticut College

MEDFORD - Seniors Hannah Park, Allison Rolfe and Rachel Terveer scored goals as the #7 ranked Tufts Field Hockey team shut out Connecticut College, 3-0, in a NESCAC game at Bello Field Saturday afternoon.

Hannah Park got the Jumbos going scoring the first goal

The Jumbos rebounded from their first loss of the season to Babson on Tuesday with a dominating performance. Tufts finished with advantages of 24-5 in shots and 16-2 on corners. Connecticut College junior goalie Ryley van der Velde played well with 14 saves or the Jumbo margin could have been greater.

On Tufts' first goal, sophomore Mary Travers' shot was saved by van der Velde, but Park was out front to capitalize on the rebound with 14:24 remaining in the half.

The Camels' best opportunities of the first half came with 10 minutes on the clock when freshman Jamie Navoni received a pass in front of the goal. However, her two shots were stuffed by Jumbo freshman goalie Libby DesRuisseaux.

The Jumbos would take a 2-0 lead off a corner attempt. Senior tri-captain Maggie Chapman inserted to senior Dakota Sikes-Keilp. She slipped a pass over to junior Elle Chrupcala at the top of the circle from where she dribbled in and fired a shot that was redirected by Rolfe into the goal with 6:43 to go until halftime.

Shots were 12-2 Tufts at the break and the Jumbos also had a 5-0 advantage on corners.

The Jumbos came out firing in the second half, earning six corners in the opening 10 minutes. Terveer's goal was the result of the sixth as she gathered the rebound off a save on junior Dominique Zarrella's shot and scored with the ball barely crossing the goal line after it was nearly saved by a Camel defender. Tufts led 3-0 with 26:09 to play in regulation.

Freshman Emily Polinski entered the game in goal for the Jumbos and made a solid save on a blast by Camel Meghan Lembo during a corner attempt to preserve the shutout. In her first collegiate action, Polinski made two saves to combine with DesRuisseaux (2 saves) on the second shutout of the year by Tufts.

The Jumbos (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) are right back at it tomorrow in NESCAC play against Trinity at Bello Field starting at noon. Connecticut College (1-3, 0-2) is at Colby tomorrow for a noon start.
