Golf 3rd After 1st Day of NESCAC Qualifier on Home Course

WAYLAND – The Tufts University golf team is in third place after one round at the 2019 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Qualifier held Saturday at the Sandy Burr Country Club.

The top four teams following Sunday's second round will advance to the conference championship tournament in the spring.

Tufts' four-best scores on Saturday totaled to 296 strokes for third place, however the scoring race is tight. The Jumbos are just one stroke behind second-place Amherst (295). Williams College leads after one day with a 291 team score. Fourth-place Hamilton recorded a 299 today, fifth-place Middlebury 300 and sixth-place Trinity 302. 

Senior co-captain Brandon Karr led Tufts on Saturday with an even-par 72. Sophomore Mac Bredahl was close behind carding a one-over 73 in his opening round. Karr is tied for fourth and Bredahl is tied for sixth individually.

Playing in his first conference qualifier, sophomore Travis Clauson shot a solid 75 (+3) to score for Tufts. Juniors Harry Theodore and Henry Hughes both shot four-over 76's today.

Williams College's Will Kannegieser leads the individual scoring after a three-under 69. Teammate Sam Goldenring (70) and Middlebury's Jeffrey Giguere (70) also shot under par today.

Day two of the NESCAC Qualifier starts on Sunday at 10 am.

Tufts is attempting to be one of the four teams to advance to the spring championship for the third consecutive year. This is the first time that the Jumbos have hosted the Qualifier.
