MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Opening its 2019-20 season at the Middlebury Invitational this weekend, the Tufts University men's tennis team will play in eight semifinal matches tomorrow after posting wins on Saturday.
Five Jumbos advanced to the single semifinals. Sophomore Isaac Gorelik in A singles, freshman Rishahb Sharda in B singles, senior co-captain Ethan Bershtein in C singles, and both junior Niko Hereford and freshman Josh Belandres in D singles all won twice on Saturday.
For doubles play, the Jumbos have three combos continuing. Junior co-captain Boris Sorkin and Belandres are still alive in the A bracket. The B flight has junior Owen Bartok with senior Ben Biswas and Gorelik with sophomore Jack Moldenhauer from the Jumbos as two of the four teams still remaining.
Gorelik advanced today with victories over Noah Williamson from Skidmore 6-4, 6-3 and against Anupreeth Coramutla from Brandeis (6-7, 7-5, 11-9). Gorelik is the defending C singles flight champion from this event last year. Making his collegiate debut as the #2 seed in B singles today, Sharda defeated Alex Vanezis from Middlebury 7-6, 6-2 and Max Schuermann from Colby 7-6, 6-1.
Bershtein eliminated the #1 seed in the C singles flight on Saturday. His 3-6, 7-6 (2), 12-10 win over Brandeis' Nikhil Das had been preceded by a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win against Eddie Wu from RPI in the opening round.
Hereford is the #1 seed in D's and received a first-round bye. For quarterfinals, he got past Hunter Levine from Brandeis 6-2, 5-7, 10-8. Belandres, the #3 D seed as a freshman, advanced to the semis with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Colby's Gerard Lopez and then won 6-3, 6-2 versus Andrew Mueller from Middlebury.
The Jumbo doubles pair of Sorkin with Belandres won a pair of tight matches on Saturday. In the first round they knocked out Aleksandr Samets and Stanley Morris from Middlebury 8-7 (1). They followed that with an 8-6 victory over Jack McClaren and Jason Keye from Skidmore.
Bartok and Biswas's B doubles wins came against Colby's Jonathan Hallal and Luis Gonzalez Kompalic (8-5) and RPI's Abraham Yohannes and Wu (8-5). Biswas was a part of Tufts' 2017 Middlebury Invitational B doubles champions with Bershtein. The Jumbo B doubles combo of Gorelik and Moldenhauer also earned a pair of 8-5 victories today against David Cohen and Alper Kulturel from Skidmore and Yudai Teruyama and Phoenix Tamaoki from RPI.
The doubles semifinals will begin on Sunday at 9 am to be followed by the semis in the four singles flights scheduled to start at 1 pm.
