LEWISTON, Maine – The Tufts University men's tennis team saw four singles players and one doubles duo advance to the semifinal round of the Wallach Invitational hosted by Bates College on Saturday.
Sophomore Isaac Gorelik in A singles, seniors Ben Biswas and co-captain Ethan Bershtein in C singles, and sophomore Akash Verma in D singles will play semifinal matches on Sunday. The A doubles pair of Gorelik and sophomore Paris Pentousis in A will do the same.
Gorelik is attempting to win his second singles title of the fall after taking the Middlebury Individual A crown. Today he advanced through the A singles flight with a round of 16 win over Yudai Teruyama from RPI (6-2, 6-1) and then a quarterfinal victory against Cam Kania from Bates. Gorelik came back from down a set to defeat Kania 4-6, 6-2, 10-7. Gorelik will play Bowdoin's Evan Fortier in the semifinals on Sunday with a spot in the final on the line.
Tufts has two of the four semifinalists in the C singles bracket. Biswas took a competitive round of 16 match over Bowdoin's Justin Patel 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-4 and then defeated RPI's Dylan Payne in the quarterfinals by the same scores. Bershtein posted a 6-2, 7-6 (6) opening win versus Alfi Auersperg from Trinity and then a 6-2, 6-2 win against Brandeis' Colt Tegtmeirer. Biswas will play Skidmore's Brendan Jimenez and Bershtein will face Suraj Mahtani from Skidmore in the semifinals on Sunday with berths into the championship round at stake.
Verma in D singles won a round of 16 match against Ryan McGarvey of Trinity 6-3, 6-3 and then had his opponent Conor Biernat from Skidmore retire in their quarterfinal contest. Verma faces Zachary Ebenfeld of RPI in Sunday's semifinals looking to advance to the final.
Gorelik and Pentousis will play against Bowdoin's Oscar Yang and Tristan Bradley in the A doubles seminfinals at 10 am Sunday. The Jumbo pair won 8-2 against Colby's Max Schuermann and Ben Powis in Saturday's round of 16. Tufts' duo took an 8-7 (1) quarterfinal victory over Nick Forester and Alex Kennedy from host Bates.
Junior Niko Hereford and sophomore Jack Moldenhauer won round of 16 matches in B singles Saturday. Freshman Matt Cashin also had a victory in the D singles round of 16. Bershtein and freshman Josh Belandres won an A doubles round of 16 match before they were eliminated in the quarters.
