MEN'S TENNIS COMPETES AT 2011 USTA/ITA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WILLIAMS

Tri-captain Sam Laber enjoyed the most success at the ITA Regionals for Tufts

WILLIAMSTOWN - Senior tri-captain Sam Laber (Cincinnati, OH) of the Tufts men's tennis team won matches in singles and doubles play at the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships hosted by Williams College Friday through Sunday.

In his opening singles match, Laber was locked in a battle with Mitchell's Kyle Carmona that was tied 5-5 in the third set. However, Carmona had to retire from the match and Laber was granted the 6-7 (3), 6-4, 5-5 (ret.) victory. He was then eliminated in the round of 32 by Williams' Trey Meyer, 6-3 and 6-1.

In the doubles bracket, Laber and junior teammate Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) won their opening match 8-5 over Bowdoin's Nicholas Fenichell and Kent Winingham. However, they faced #1 seeded Brantner Jones and Andrew Lebovitz from Middlebury and lost 8-3 in the second round.

In other singles play, Barad, junior Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Austin Blau (East Hills, NY) all lost first-round matches. The doubles pair of Lutz and senior tri-captain Kai Victoria (Miami, FL) dropped a tough 9-8 (4) opener against Williams' Felix Sun and Matt Micheli.

Coach Jaime Kenney's Jumbos are in action next when they finish the fall portion of their schedule at Babson on October 7.
